North Fork Trail follows Route 25 for 36 miles across Long Island's North Fork, through more than 40 vineyards to the edge of the Atlantic. Also known as Main Road, the byway crosses Suffolk County's fertile farmland, where a maritime climate and well-drained soil have made the North Fork one of the East Coast's leading wine regions, known especially for Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling. Wineries including Bedell Cellars, Macari Vineyards, and Kontokosta Winery sit directly along or just off the route, many offering tastings with views over the vines toward Long Island Sound or the Peconic Bay. The drive passes quiet hamlets, working farm stands, and stretches of wetland before reaching Greenport, a historic seaport village with a working harbor, boutique shops, art galleries, and waterfront restaurants built around its 19th-century whaling and shipbuilding past. The byway ends with an open view of the Atlantic Ocean, a fitting close to a route defined as much by water as by wine.
