Route 20 Scenic Byway 20

Route 20 Scenic Byway covers 108 miles of US Route 20, the longest highway in America, tracing New York's historic path of westward settlement. The full US 20 runs 3,365 miles from Boston to the Oregon coast, and within New York it's the state's longest highway at 372 miles from the Massachusetts border to Pennsylvania; the designated scenic segment runs from Duanesburg in Schenectady County west to LaFayette in Onondaga County. The corridor began in 1799 as the first Great Western Turnpike, a toll road that carried settlers moving west before railroads existed, and later became known as the Cherry Valley Turnpike before joining the modern U.S. highway system in 1926. New York State designated the route a Scenic Byway in 2006 in recognition of its role in the young nation's westward expansion, and the Route 20 Association, formed in 1999, works to preserve the historic character of the small towns strung along it. Old inns, classic diners, and 19th-century main streets give the drive a slower, more Americana feel than the interstate running roughly parallel to the south.
