Western New York Southtowns Scenic Byway loops 108 miles through the hills southeast of Buffalo, from Lake Erie's shore into the region's ski country. The route unites Erie and Cattaraugus counties, running through Orchard Park, Aurora, Boston, Colden, and Concord, with a recent extension carrying it further south through Ashford to Ellicottville. In East Aurora, the byway passes the Roycroft Campus, a National Historic Landmark and the birthplace of the American Arts and Crafts movement, founded as a community of craftspeople and printers in the 1890s. Further along, Griffis Sculpture Park has installed steel sculptures across 450 acres of hillside since the early 1960s, an outdoor gallery visitors can wander on foot. The Southtowns' rolling hills and deep forests turn red and gold each fall, then draw skiers and snowboarders once the snow arrives, giving the byway a genuine four-season identity. Biking, hiking, fine dining, and photography round out a route built as much around small-town culture as scenery.
