Averasboro Battlefield Scenic Byway is a North Carolina byway on Highway 82, tracing the route Union General William T. Sherman's forces marched through the Cape Fear River Valley in the war's final weeks. The road runs between Erwin and Godwin in Cumberland and Harnett counties, passing the Averasborough Battlefield Museum, built at the site of a Civil War battle fought here on March 16, 1865, one of the last major engagements of the war. Long before the fighting, the corridor had already served two other roles: it was part of the mid-1800s plank road network, timber roadways built from local wood to speed travel through the region, and in 1825 the French general Marquis de Lafayette rode this same route on his farewell tour of the United States, en route to Fayetteville. Today the byway is a quiet rural drive through farmland and pine woods, with historical markers along both sides tracing the battle's final movements for visitors willing to stop and read them.
