Cape Fear Historic Byway is an 8-mile urban scenic route through historic downtown Wilmington, North Carolina, tracing the city's waterfront along the Cape Fear River. About seven miles of the byway run through Wilmington's historic district streets, including a stretch of North 3rd Street, before crossing the river on the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge, which serves as one of the route's gateway landmarks. Along the way, the drive passes close to Greenfield Lake, a cypress-lined park lake south of downtown, as well as the antebellum and Victorian architecture that fills Wilmington's historic core. Because it runs on city streets rather than open highway, this is one of the shorter and more urban entries among North Carolina's scenic byways, built around walkable downtown blocks and river views rather than long-distance mountain or coastal scenery. It works best paired with time actually spent on foot in Wilmington's historic district, since the byway is really a scenic frame around a city worth exploring at a slower pace than driving allows.
