Flint Hill Ramble winds through North Carolina's Uwharrie National Forest, from the old gold-mining town of Ophir to the community of Flint Hill. The route follows Route 1306 out of Ophir, once a boom town during the state's early 19th-century gold rush, past ruins of old mines along the Uwharrie River, before ending at Lovejoy Road. Along the way it passes Jumping Off Rock, a rocky bluff overlooking the water that also marks the northern trailhead of the 20-mile Uwharrie National Recreational Trail. The road's tight curves and rolling elevation changes have earned it a local reputation as a small-scale stand-in for the Great Smoky Mountains, though it stays entirely within the low, ancient Uwharrie range. This is a remote, lightly traveled byway aimed at hikers and mountain bikers as much as drivers, with the national forest's backcountry campsites and trailheads its main destinations rather than any single overlook or town.
