Football Road runs across North Carolina's Piedmont between Greensboro and Chapel Hill, named for the fans who once used it as a shortcut to UNC games. The byway crosses the rolling farmland of southern Alamance County, a stretch of small dairy operations, creeks, and ponds between the Triad and Triangle metropolitan areas. Much of the route doubles as a designated recreational bicycle road, and cyclists training or touring between the two regions are as common a sight as cars. Unlike North Carolina's mountain or coastal byways, Football Road has no single landmark or overlook driving its designation; instead it's valued for the uninterrupted stretch of open countryside it preserves between two of the state's fastest-growing urban areas.
