French Broad Overview traces North Carolina's longest free-flowing river for 16 miles, from Weaverville to Marshall in the Blue Ridge foothills. The byway runs through Buncombe and Madison counties along sheer rock walls called palisades, carved by the French Broad River as it cut through the valley over millions of years. English colonists originally called it the Broad River; 'French' was added in the 18th century for the traders who worked the territory west of the Blue Ridge where the river drains. The route roughly follows old Native American trading paths that once linked villages and posts as far as the Tennessee and Ohio river valleys. Today the French Broad draws paddlers of all kinds, from calm canoeing stretches to whitewater rafting and summer tubing, and the road offers frequent pull-offs for river access. It's a compact, scenic warm-up to the more famous byways further into the Smokies, with the palisades and river views making the short drive worthwhile on its own.
