Millbridge Scenic Byway winds through Rowan County, North Carolina, past a nearly 200-year-old gristmill and one of the state's oldest Presbyterian churches. The byway takes its name from the flour mill Dr. Samuel Kerr built in 1823 in the Scotch-Irish settlement of Millbridge; the mill still stands at Sloan Park today with a working waterwheel. Nearby, Thyatira Church, founded by the same Scotch-Irish settlers, remains one of North Carolina's oldest Presbyterian congregations. The route passes pick-your-own fruit orchards and the Piedmont Agricultural Research Station, keeping much of its farmland character intact, and drivers can detour into the Lazy Five Ranch, a drive-through animal park where zebras, ostriches, antelope, bison, and reindeer roam within sight of the road. The city of Salisbury sits just off the byway, adding a dose of Civil War history for anyone willing to extend the drive a little further. It's a compact, family-friendly route built around 19th-century agricultural heritage rather than any single dramatic landscape.
