Mission Crossing follows NC 194 for 17 miles through North Carolina's High Country, from Cranberry through Banner Elk to Valle Crucis and Vilas. The state-designated byway traces paths Cherokee travelers once used through the Blue Ridge Mountains, running through the Elk River Valley before descending into the Watauga River Valley. In Valle Crucis, the drive passes the original Mast General Store, trading continuously since 1882, and the Mast Farm Inn, an 1812 farmstead considered one of the best-preserved 19th-century farms in western North Carolina, along with the Baird Barn, a well-preserved transverse crib barn from the same era. The route runs along the northern edge of the Roan Mountain range within Pisgah National Forest, with ski slopes near Banner Elk giving the corridor a winter identity as well as a summer one. Fall visitors time it for mid-October, when the hardwood forest along the valley turns a mix of amber, crimson, and gold that locals consider the drive's best display.
