On the North Carolina side, US-441 descends from Newfound Gap — on the state line at 5,046 feet — toward Cherokee and the park's Oconaluftee entrance, following the Oconaluftee River past a working mountain farm museum. The road climbs through the highest terrain in the eastern United States, with a spur to Clingmans Dome, the loftiest point in the Smokies. It is the only full crossing of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
