North Durham Country Byway winds through the farmland and forests just north of Durham, North Carolina, past one of the South's largest former plantations. The route passes Historic Stagville, once among the largest plantation holdings in the South under the Cameron and Bennehan families, now a state historic site that centers African American history and the lives of the thousands of enslaved people who worked the land. Along US 501, the byway passes Quail Roost, organized as a hunt club in 1875 and later developed into one of the nation's leading stables and dairy operations; today it trains Duke University's equestrian team and hosts the Rougemont Red Mountain Hounds Hunt Club. Hill Demonstration Forest adds a stretch of managed woodland and wildlife habitat to the drive. Compared with Durham's dense urban core just to the south, this byway preserves a rural landscape of old plantation boundaries, waterways, and working land, offering a quieter, history-focused counterpoint to the city.
