Rolling Kansas Byway crosses 9.2 miles of North Carolina's western Piedmont, nicknamed for hilltop farms and windmills that once evoked the Great Plains. The short route winds through wavering countryside of open pasture and cropland, offering panoramic views across the Piedmont that early residents apparently thought resembled the rolling farm country of Kansas, a name that stuck even though the two landscapes share little beyond the low, rounded hills. Along the way, the byway passes the graveyard of Bethel Bear Creek United Church of Christ, with tombstones dating to the 1820s among the oldest burial grounds in Stanly County. There are no major towns or landmark attractions on the route itself; its appeal is the unbroken sweep of farmland, largely unchanged for generations, glimpsed from a quiet two-lane road. It's often driven in combination with neighboring Pee Dee Valley Drive, another short Stanly County byway, for a fuller look at this stretch of the Uwharrie region's rural Piedmont.
