Scots-Welsh Heritage Byway crosses 10 miles of Orange County, North Carolina farmland, along trade routes 18th-century Scotch-Welsh settlers once traveled. The roads themselves date to about 1770, built over paths Native Americans and early backcountry pioneers had used before the English crown granted this land to Scotch-Welsh families. Working dairy farms still line the byway today, some open for local milk and cheese sales, and the Cane Creek Baptist Church Cemetery holds Civil War-era graves among its older headstones. Just three miles past the byway's end, the town of Hillsborough offers a denser concentration of history, including brick colonial-era buildings and a clock the King of England gave the town in the 1760s, still keeping time in the courthouse cupola. The byway itself stays rural and low-key, a short, unhurried drive through pastureland that hasn't changed much in character since the settlers who first cleared it arrived two and a half centuries ago.
