US 421 Scenic Byway climbs eight miles from Deep Gap to Boone in the North Carolina High Country, an easy, divided-highway alternative to winding mountain roads. The route begins where US 421 meets the Blue Ridge Parkway near Deep Gap, hometown of the influential flatpicking guitarist and folk musician Doc Watson, then climbs toward Boone, home of Appalachian State University. Unlike most Blue Ridge byways, this stretch is a four-lane divided highway posted at 55 miles per hour, making its panoramic views of Snake Mountain and Elk Knob, part of the geologically distinct Amphibolite Range, accessible without the tight curves typical of the region. Hardwood and mixed forest line the drive alongside horse and cattle pasture, and Fraser fir Christmas tree farms climb the hillsides in neat rows, a major regional industry as well as a scenic one. At just 15 minutes end to end, it's one of the shortest scenic byways in the North Carolina mountains, best treated as a quick, high-elevation prelude to a longer stay in Boone or along the parkway itself.
