Whitewater Way follows NC 281 from Sapphire to the South Carolina line, named for Whitewater Falls, the highest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains. The short mountain byway threads through Transylvania and Jackson counties in North Carolina's Blue Ridge, passing Gorges State Park, a steep, temperate-climate gorge that receives near-tropical rainfall totals and functions almost like a rainforest, supporting rare plants and animals not found in the drier terrain nearby. The falls themselves drop in stages down a rock face near the North Carolina-South Carolina line, a short hike from designated overlooks, and draw hikers and photographers even outside of peak leaf season. Compared with the region's longer, more developed byways, Whitewater Way stays compact and lightly trafficked, built around a single dramatic natural feature rather than a string of towns or historic sites. It connects naturally with South Carolina's own Sumter National Forest byways just across the state line for travelers continuing south.
