North Dakota's Old Red Old Ten Scenic Byway runs 108 miles from the Mandan Depot on Main Street to Dickinson, paralleling Interstate 94. It traces the historic Old Red Trail, an early transcontinental auto route that once ran from Seattle to New York City and later became old US Highway 10, a road General Custer's column had followed decades earlier on its march west toward Montana. What started as a dirt trail in the early 1900s passes through New Salem, Almont, Glen Ullin, and Hebron, then Richardton, Taylor, and Gladstone, including a 12-mile unpaved detour near Almont known as the Curlew Loop. Local residents from both counties began pushing in 2006 to designate the route as a state byway specifically to draw travelers off the interstate and into these small towns, succeeding in 2008 when it became North Dakota's tenth scenic byway. The drive is as much a tribute to the early days of American auto tourism and AAA-era road building as to the rolling countryside it passes through.
