Miami & Erie Canal Scenic Byway follows 54 miles of State Route 66 through western Ohio, from Johnston Farm in Piqua north to Delphos in Allen County. The route traces the path of the historic Miami and Erie Canal, which operated between 1840 and 1860 and once carried freight and passengers between Cincinnati and Toledo before railroads made it obsolete. Along the way it passes Minster, New Bremen, St. Marys, and Spencerville, farm towns settled heavily by German immigrants whose descendants still shape the area's churches, bakeries, and family farms. Restored canal locks, feeder dams, and towpath sections survive at several points, giving the drive a stronger throughline of industrial history than most of Ohio's rural byways.
