North Ridge Scenic Byway covers 9 miles of State Route 254 in Lorain County, Ohio, running through Avon and Sheffield just west of Cleveland. More than a hundred historic homes dating to the 1830s line the route, largely free of the postwar commercial strip development found on nearby roads. The byway's real distinction is geological: more than 12,000 years ago, when Lake Erie's water level was higher, this ridge was the lake's shoreline, and State Route 254 now runs along that ancient beach at roughly 670 to 690 feet above sea level, rising about 30 feet above the flat former lake bottom to the north. The road was historically known as North Ridge Road; its eastern segment across the Black River is now called Detroit Road.
