Scenic Scioto Heritage Trail runs more than 80 miles from the river town of Portsmouth into Shawnee State Forest. The stretch of hill country is nicknamed "Ohio's Little Smokies." The byway was founded in 2007 after local organizers, inspired by a trip to Tennessee's Great Smoky Mountains, set out to showcase this corner of southern Ohio's own rugged terrain along the Ohio River. Much of the route runs through Shawnee State Forest and into Shawnee State Park, where travelers can book the park lodge or a cabin and fill a stay with boating, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The drive is steeper and more wooded than most Ohio byways, a genuine change of pace from the state's farm country.
