Tappan-Moravian Trail Scenic Byway runs 55 miles through eastern Ohio's Tappan Lake and Clendening Lake country. It winds past family farms, open fields, and long stretches of shoreline. New Rumley, reached via State Route 646, is the birthplace of Civil War cavalry officer George Armstrong Custer, marked today by a memorial at the site. Farther along, Deersville's small Main Street was recently added to the National Register of Historic Places, one of several well-preserved 19th-century town centers along the route. The byway's name nods to the Moravian missionaries who settled this part of the Ohio frontier in the 1770s, working among Delaware communities before the Revolutionary War upended the region.
