The Osage Nation Heritage Trail Byway follows US Highway 60 for 65 miles across Osage County, Oklahoma, from Ponca City to Bartlesville. It runs through Pawhuska, the Osage Nation's capital, and debuted with a ribbon-cutting on September 5, 2019, the finish line of a roughly 20-year effort by the Osage Nation that included a National Scenic Byways Planning Grant, an Interpretive Master Plan, and an Oklahoma Scenic Byways designation. Turnouts along the route carry interpretive panels built around four themes: Osage heritage and government, the early-20th-century oil boom that made Osage headright holders among the wealthiest people in the world (and later the subject of a string of unsolved murders), the vast native tallgrass prairie that still covers much of the county, and the ranching that has shaped the land since. The drive crosses open grassland with few trees, punctuated by pumpjacks, cattle, and the Osage Nation Museum in Pawhuska, tying oil-boom history and prairie ecology into one continuous corridor.
