One of Oregon's longest byways winds about 290 miles across the high desert and canyon country of north-central Oregon, from the Columbia River through old gold-mining and ranching towns. Its centerpiece is the John Day Fossil Beds, including the vividly banded clay hills of the Painted Hills, which record millions of years of climate change. The route passes ghost towns, the Kam Wah Chung heritage site, and wide open rangeland.
