This byway loops around Mount Hood, Oregon's highest peak at 11,239 feet, linking the Columbia River at Hood River with the historic Barlow Road segment of the Oregon Trail. It passes the famous Hood River "Fruit Loop" of orchards and the 1930s WPA-built Timberline Lodge perched on the mountain's flank at 6,000 feet. The glaciated volcano is in view for much of the drive.
