Oregon's Umpqua River Scenic Byway runs 66 miles from Oakland to Reedsport, following the Umpqua River through the Coast Range to the Pacific. Oakland was once a busy stop on the railroad linking Portland and Sacramento, and its well-preserved 19th-century brick storefronts, a National Historic Landmark district, still line the town's 'historic row.' The drive threads historic timber towns, wine country, and old fur-trading posts before reaching tidewater at Reedsport, where the Umpqua Discovery Center covers the region's natural and cultural history and boats can reach the open Pacific five miles downstream at Winchester Bay. Reedsport also serves as the gateway to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area's towering coastal sand dunes. The Umpqua is legendary among anglers for its chinook salmon, sturgeon, and especially steelhead runs, and the looping stretch between Kellogg and Elkton is prized for some of the West's best smallmouth bass fishing.
