The Grand View Scenic Byway threads 3 miles along Grandview Avenue, P.J. McArdle Roadway, and Sycamore Street atop Pittsburgh's Mount Washington, tracing the clifftop that gives the city one of its most photographed skyline views. Pennsylvania designated the three connected roads a state scenic byway in 2003. Along the route, overlooks including the Grandview Overlook, the Pittsburgh Skyline Overlook, and the Patrick T. Fagan Overlook look straight down on the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers and the downtown skyline beyond, while the historic Monongahela and Duquesne Inclines carry passengers up and down the hillside on 19th-century funicular tracks. The byway runs through Emerald View Park, a large municipal park formerly called Grand View Scenic Byway Park, that wraps around the Mount Washington, Duquesne Heights, and Allentown neighborhoods and draws more than 1.5 million visitors a year. Few scenic byways anywhere pack this much urban drama into so short a drive.
