Pennsylvania's 14-mile stretch of the Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Scenic Byway begins at the junction of US 15 and PA 394 and runs straight through Gettysburg National Military Park. It's the northern anchor of a 180-mile, three-state byway that continues south through Maryland to Monticello, Virginia. Along this short Pennsylvania segment alone, the corridor passes the Eternal Light Peace Memorial, a 1938 monument marking the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, and the Soldiers' National Cemetery, where Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address in 1863. The route also reaches the 189-acre Eisenhower National Historic Site, the farm Dwight D. Eisenhower used as a retreat during and after his presidency. The full Hallowed Ground corridor is billed as covering 400 years of American history — colonial settlement, the Revolutionary War, the Underground Railroad, and the Civil War — and this Pennsylvania end concentrates almost entirely on the last of those.
