Route 114 and High Street run 5 miles through Bristol, Rhode Island, shaded for nearly their whole length by a canopy of mature trees. The route passes through the heart of Bristol's historic core, a planned community laid out in the 17th century whose street grid still guides the town today. Along the way it reaches Colt State Park, with its long waterfront lawns on Narragansett Bay, and Blithewold, a Gilded Age mansion and 33-acre arboretum known for its formal gardens. Bristol's Fourth of July parade, the country's oldest continuous celebration of the holiday, runs down this same corridor every summer.
