State Route 174 runs about 17 miles down to Edisto Island, a quiet sea island in South Carolina's Lowcountry south of Charleston. The road passes beneath canopies of live oak hung with Spanish moss, by tidal creeks and old plantation lands at the edge of the ACE Basin, one of the largest undeveloped estuaries on the East Coast. It ends at the unhurried, low-rise beach town of Edisto Beach.
