Long Point Road Scenic Highway runs a short two miles through Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, just east of Charleston, past plantation and historic sites. The route passes near Boone Hall Plantation, one of America's oldest working plantations and still known for its live oak allee, as well as Palmetto Islands County Park and the Charles Pinckney National Historic Site, which preserves the boyhood home of a framer of the U.S. Constitution. An earthwork entrenchment built alongside the road in 1860 once formed part of the defenses meant to protect Charleston, Fort Moultrie, and Mount Pleasant. Despite its brevity, the corridor has become one of the busier roads in the area, carrying more than 23,000 vehicles a day since 2009 as Mount Pleasant's suburbs have grown around it. Live oaks and marsh views still line stretches of the route, giving it a scenic character that state officials recognized with a byway designation even as the surrounding land has developed.
