Mathis Ferry Road Scenic Highway offers a quiet, tree-canopied alternative to busy US 17 through Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, near Charleston. The narrow two-lane road, posted at 35 miles per hour, runs beneath overhanging live oaks that have so far survived the residential development spreading through this fast-growing Charleston suburb. It provides access to Patriots Point, home of the retired aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, a Cold War submarine memorial, and a dedicated Vietnam Experience exhibit, all overlooking Charleston Harbor. The town has been building the parallel Mathis Ferry Trail, a 3.5-mile multiuse path meant to give cyclists and pedestrians an alternative to the road itself, running from the Wingo Way area to US 17. Compared with the commercial strip development along nearby US 17, Mathis Ferry Road keeps a slower, more residential character, which is what earned it a state scenic highway designation alongside neighboring Long Point Road.
