Oscar Wigington Scenic Byway climbs South Carolina Highway 107 from Walhalla into the Blue Ridge foothills, ending at an overlook above Lake Jocassee near the North Carolina line. The 15-mile route through Sumter National Forest shares its pavement with the neighboring Falling Waters byway designation, passing the same run of attractions: Isaqueena Falls, the unfinished Stumphouse Mountain Tunnel, and Oconee State Park. Its name and its high point both honor Oscar Wigington, a former mayor of the small Oconee County town of Salem, for whom the overlook near the North Carolina line was dedicated. From roughly 2,000 feet, the Oscar Wigington Overlook looks west across the deep-green reservoir of Lake Jocassee toward the surrounding Blue Ridge peaks, one of the widest mountain views reachable by paved road in South Carolina. The drive climbs steadily through pine and hardwood forest that peaks with color in October, and its narrow curves and forest campgrounds make it feel more like a mountain byway than a Lowcountry drive.
