Riverland Drive Scenic Highway winds five miles across James Island, South Carolina, just outside Charleston, beneath oak canopy toward the Stono River. The road passes through a mix of older residential neighborhoods and undeveloped, moss-draped highway before reaching James Island County Park, which offers a waterpark, fishing dock, activity center, and miles of waterfront trails along the Stono. Stretches of the drive remain wetland and marsh, a contrast to the more built-up parts of James Island closer to the city, and tree canopy shades the pavement through much of the route. It's a quiet, short alternative to Folly Road for reaching the county park and the Stono River waterfront, popular with cyclists and walkers as well as drivers. The Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments oversees the byway designation, part of a broader Charleston-area network of scenic drives that also includes nearby Fort Johnson Road on the same island.
