S-13 Scenic Highway is a short Beaufort County, South Carolina segment of the May River Scenic Byway, running to Brighton Beach on the May River. Along with SC Highway 46 and State Road S-66, this stretch forms one continuous corridor connecting the growing town of Bluffton to the water. The road runs beneath live oak canopy before opening onto the May River waterfront, home to the Bluffton Oyster Company, in continuous operation since 1899 and the last facility of its kind still shucking oysters commercially in South Carolina. The May River has long supplied a meaningful share of the state's oyster harvest, work historically carried out by Gullah Geechee watermen with generations of knowledge of the river's tides and shell beds. Rapid growth in Bluffton has brought new stormwater runoff into the watershed, closing part of the river's headwaters to shellfishing in 2009, which has made preserving the low-development character of this approach road more than an aesthetic concern.
