SC-170 Scenic Highway crosses South Carolina's Lowcountry between the Broad River and SC 462, an eight-mile stretch on the way to Hilton Head. The designated segment sits within the larger 35-mile SC Highway 170, the primary four-lane connector between the city of Beaufort and the Bluffton/Hilton Head area near the Georgia line. Along the scenic stretch, the road opens onto wide views of the Chechessee River and the marshes and wetlands that surround it, with the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge within reach to the southwest. Despite carrying heavy commuter and tourist traffic between Beaufort County's coastal communities, the highway's landscaped medians and river crossing give this section a different character from the strip development found along parts of the fuller route. It connects toward the Hilton Head Scenic Highway designation on US 278 a few miles further south, forming one continuous scenic corridor for travelers heading from Beaufort toward the resort islands.
