Tennessee's Cumberland Historic Byway runs 200 miles from Cumberland Gap to Celina, crossing eight Upper Cumberland counties. The Cumberland Gap itself was the crossing point for hundreds of thousands of settlers moving west into Kentucky and Tennessee, and the byway now links 17 communities across Claiborne, Campbell, Scott, Morgan, Fentress, Pickett, Overton, and Clay Counties that still carry that pioneer-era identity. Along the way, Historic Rugby preserves a fully restored 1880s Victorian settlement built by British immigrants deep in what was then wilderness. The Alvin York Farm National Historic District lets visitors walk the farm and water-powered gristmill of Sergeant Alvin York, World War I's most celebrated American hero, and a humble log cabin marks the birthplace of Cordell Hull, FDR's Secretary of State, Nobel Peace Prize winner, and so-called 'Father of the United Nations.' A federally designated National Scenic Byway, the route gives physical shape to the stories and traditions still embraced across the Upper Cumberland.
