US-64 follows the Ocoee River through a steep gorge in the Cherokee National Forest of southeastern Tennessee, the first National Forest Scenic Byway in the country. The river hosted the whitewater events of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and remains one of the most popular rafting rivers in the East, often running over a dam-fed course right beside the road.
