State Route 24 crosses Capitol Reef National Park along the Fremont River, cutting through the Waterpocket Fold — a nearly 100-mile wrinkle in the earth's crust of tilted red and white sandstone. Roadside stops include centuries-old Fremont petroglyph panels, the historic Mormon settlement of Fruita with its working orchards, and domes of white Navajo sandstone that reminded early travelers of capitol buildings. It is the quietest of Utah's "Mighty 5" park drives.
