The Energy Loop climbs over the Wasatch Plateau on State Routes 31, 264, and 96, linking Huntington and Eccles canyons in the coal country of central Utah. The byway rises into high alpine forest and meadow near 10,000 feet, passing Scofield Reservoir and Cleveland Reservoir and connecting to the long dirt Skyline Drive along the plateau crest. Its name nods to the coal mines and power plants of the surrounding valleys.
