Flaming Gorge - Green River Basin Scenic Byway is the Utah continuation of a scenic byway that runs north into Wyoming. It traces US Highway 191 and Highway 44 along the west side of Flaming Gorge Reservoir. In Utah the route runs from Vernal north to Greendale Junction, then west on Highway 44 to Manila, with the jagged skyline of the Uinta Mountains, the highest east-west trending range in the contiguous U.S., visible off to the south for much of the drive. Just across the state line in Wyoming, the connecting roads earned an All-American Road designation in 2020, the top tier of the national byway program, largely for the reservoir and canyon scenery this Utah stretch feeds into. Along the way the byway skirts Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, with pullouts overlooking the reservoir's red-rock canyon walls and access points for boating and fishing. It's a high-desert, high-elevation drive best done in the warmer months, when Highway 44's mountain pass sections are reliably clear.
