Great Salt Lake Legacy Parkway

Great Salt Lake Legacy Parkway is an 11.5-mile scenic parkway, signed as State Route 67, running through Davis County, Utah alongside wetlands on the edge of the Great Salt Lake. It was designated a Utah Scenic Byway in 2002, six years before it actually opened, after a legal fight over its environmental impact delayed construction; a federal court found the original environmental review inadequate for not fully considering routes that would do less damage to surrounding wetlands. A revised environmental study completed in 2005 changed the alignment and added land to the adjoining Legacy Nature Preserve, along with a parallel trail system that still runs beside the parkway today. Construction finally went ahead in 2006, and the four-lane, controlled-access parkway opened in September 2008 after a total cost of about $685 million. The road earned the Federal Highway Administration's Environmental Excellence Award in 2007 for the preserve and mitigation work built into the final design, making the drive as much a lesson in wetland conservation as it is a scenic route along the lake's shoreline marshes.
