State Route 143 crosses the Markagunt Plateau between Parowan and Panguitch, climbing past Brian Head — at nearly 11,000 feet one of Utah's highest towns — and skirting Cedar Breaks and Panguitch Lake. The route crosses recent-looking lava flows and dark volcanic rock that record the plateau's young geologic history. It links several of southern Utah's high-country recreation areas in a single drive.
