Utah's State Route 313 runs 22.5 miles near Moab as the Dead Horse Point Mesa Scenic Byway. It's the main access road for Canyonlands' Island in the Sky district and Dead Horse Point State Park. The route existed only as an unmarked county road through the 1960s, while a planned nearby state highway, SR-278, was never built; in 1975 the Utah Department of Transportation canceled that plan and assigned SR-313 to the existing local road instead. The original alignment climbed grades as steep as 11 percent through blind switchback corners, hazards that got fixed in a 1980s rebuild carried out alongside separate work on the Canyonlands access road, which eased the maximum grade to 8 percent and regraded the switchbacks onto more level ground. The payoff at the end is Dead Horse Point's overlook, one of the most photographed views of the Colorado River's goosenecks anywhere in Utah.
