Vermont's Lake Champlain Byway runs 184 miles along US Routes 2 and 7, circling the state's entire Lake Champlain shoreline. Through Grand Isle, Chittenden, and Addison Counties, twenty-two communities line the route, including Middlebury, Vergennes, Shelburne, Charlotte, Milton, and Colchester, most still built on the agriculture that has defined the lakeshore for generations. More than 200 parks, museums, boat launches, and performing arts sites sit along the way, several of them devoted to the layered history of the Abenaki, Yankee, and French settlers who have called this shoreline home. The drive offers sweeping views across the lake to both the Adirondacks in New York and the Green Mountains rising behind Vermont's working farmland. Federally recognized as part of America's Byways program, it's one of the most complete lakeshore drives in New England, tracing nearly the entire length of Vermont's western border in a single continuous route.
