Vermont's Stone Valley Byway runs about 30 miles on Route 30 from Poultney to Manchester. The valley was shaped by more than a century of marble and slate quarrying. The route passes Hubbardton, site of the only Revolutionary War battle fought on Vermont soil, along with Castleton, Wells, Pawlet, Rupert, and Dorset. Marble was once so abundant here that Manchester and Dorset both still have marble sidewalks downtown, a legacy of the quarries and mills that once anchored the valley's economy. Along the drive, the Dorset Playhouse hosts a long-running regional theater season, and the Poultney Historical Society's museums document the area's quarrying and farming past. The free-flowing Mettawee and Poultney Rivers cut through fertile farmland between the historic, picturesque town centers, tying the valley's marble-industry history to the working agricultural land that surrounds it today.
