Virginia's stretch of the Journey Through Hallowed Ground Byway runs south from the Potomac River through Leesburg, Middleburg, and Culpeper toward Monticello. It's the Virginia portion of a 180-mile, three-state National Scenic Byway running from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, through Maryland into Virginia, a corridor its backers say holds more historic sites than any comparable stretch of road in the country. In Virginia alone the route passes registered historic plantations, working vineyards, farmers markets, and Civil War battlefields, along with the homes of Founding Fathers Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe. Across the full three-state byway, the tally includes more than 10,000 National Register of Historic Places listings, 49 national historic districts, and sites spanning the Revolutionary War, the French and Indian War, the War of 1812, and the largest single collection of Civil War sites in the nation. Recognized as a National Register of Historic Places Travel Itinerary, the drive turns a normal Piedmont farm-country route into a dense, chronological tour of American history.
