State Route 410 climbs the eastern flank of Mount Rainier to Chinook Pass at 5,430 feet, skirting the national park boundary through old-growth forest and subalpine meadows that erupt with wildflowers in late summer. The glaciated bulk of Rainier dominates the views, and a log overpass marks the pass where the Pacific Crest Trail crosses. Snow closes the pass for much of the year.

What is a National Scenic Byway?
National Scenic Byways are roads recognized at the federal level for at least one outstanding quality — scenic, natural, historic, cultural, archaeological or recreational — that gives travelers a reason to seek them out rather than just pass through.
