State Route 542 follows the Nooksack River up to Artist Point, a high parking area at about 5,100 feet wedged between the glaciers of Mount Baker and the rock spires of Mount Shuksan. The Mount Baker ski area here once recorded the most snowfall ever measured in a single season anywhere on earth. The final stretch to Artist Point opens only briefly in late summer once the snow melts.
