Washington's Pacific Coast Scenic Byway follows US 101 for 350 miles around the entire Olympic Peninsula, from the state capital of Olympia south along the coast to Long Beach near the Oregon border. Along the way it passes through Hood Canal and Olympic National Park's rainforests and beaches. Its scenic credentials keep climbing: the route became a National Scenic Byway in 1998 and was elevated further to All-American Road status in 2002, the highest designation the federal program awards, placing it among a small handful of roads nationwide. The drive is defined by contrast — quiet Hood Canal inlets give way to the temperate rainforests of the Hoh and Quinault valleys, then to open Pacific beaches backed by driftwood and sea stacks — while small coastal towns along the way offer lodging, seafood, and access to the peninsula's tribal communities.
