The Nicolet-Wolf River Scenic Byway is a 145-mile Wisconsin scenic byway through Forest, Langlade, Oneida, and Vilas counties, the state's second-longest. It's named for the Nicolet National Forest and the Wolf River, a federally designated national scenic river, and was dedicated in 2017 as Wisconsin's fifth official scenic byway. The winding, lightly developed route passes through the headwaters country of the Wolf River amid family-owned businesses and small towns where life moves at a deliberately slower pace than the interstates farther south. Native American powwows, Polish Heritage Days, and other local festivals give the corridor a strong cultural calendar alongside its natural scenery, while loons, owls, and whitetail deer are common along quieter stretches of road. Hundreds of miles of ATV and UTV trails branch off the byway, along with hiking, biking, and canoe routes on the Wolf River itself. It's a long, unhurried drive best suited to travelers planning to stop often rather than pass through.
